The most Clicked Adsense Units and Best Placement

As a part time blogger I have over the past months been playing around with my Google adsense ad units on my blogs, trying to find the adsense ad units that generate more clicks. My experience has confirmed what I have learnt from other bloggers that the most clicked adsense ad units are the 336 x 280 large rectangle, 300 x 250 medium rectangle, 728 x 90 banner ad, the 120 x 600 skyscraper and 160 x 600 skyscraper.

728 x 90 Leaderboard

728 x 90 leaderboard is probably the most popular google adsense ad unit and it will stretch across the screen allowing google to put more ads and therefore more variety for readers of any blog. The best position to place the this google adsense ad unit is at the top of the page above the main text, blended into the top of the page beneath the navigation bar. Putting it at the bottom of page may not generate more clicks as most people usually do not go as far as the bottom  of the post. Therefore putting it at the bottom of a post will decrease your chances of visitors to your blog clicking the leaderboard.

336 x 180 Large Rectangle

336 x 280

The second most popular and in my case by far the most clicked ad on my blogs is the 336 x 280 large rectangle. It is best placed immediately after the post title before the content. To increase clicks some people including myself wrap some text around it so that visitors will think of it as part of the text and not as an ad. Lets face it how many times do you click on ads when visiting websites and blogs. I rarely do.

The rules for placement of the 350 x 250 medium rectangle are the same as the ones for the 336 x 280 large rectangle. It is especially useful where you want to place two sets of ad side by side as they fit perfectly well. This is to me the second most clicked ad units if placed just below post title. I have not yet tested the other placement to be able to comment much. 

160 x 600

Finally on the skyscrapers most analysts believe that the best post position for the skyscrapers is the right hand edge of the screen. .Most people are right handed and they usually hold their mouse in the right hand start scrolling from the right of the screen. Therefore placing the ads on the right side of the page creates less distance between the right hand and the screen and a feeling of control on the part of the visitor. This therefore increases the chances of your visitors clicking the google adsense ads.The best performing skyscraper is the 160 x 600

In summary I would therefore state that to have more clicks you have to understand the psychology and experiences of your visitors. Play around with various ads units and various placement until you find the most convenient ad units and placement for your site. The guidelines above are based on my experiences and experiences of other people. Lastly, I need to point out that  most people are tired of adverts and therefore while right placement is good, you also need to make sure that the adverts blend in withe the rest of the content of the blog or website.
